Compare BRITA MAXTRA PRO cartridges and the Marella pitcher to find the right water filter for your coffee setup, based on capacity, convenience, and replacement costs.
Quick answer
If you already own a BRITA Marella pitcher, the MAXTRA PRO Pure Performance cartridges are the practical upgrade for better-tasting coffee. If you're starting fresh, the Marella pitcher with a included cartridge offers the simplest entry point.
Capacity and Convenience: Pitcher vs. Cartridges
The Marella pitcher holds 2.4 liters of filtered water, which is enough for several cups of coffee at once. It comes with one MAXTRA PRO Pure Performance cartridge, so you can start filtering immediately after a quick rinse.
The MAXTRA PRO 4-pack is a replacement option for existing Marella users. Each cartridge filters about 150 liters, and the 4-pack covers up to 600 liters total. That's roughly four months of filtered water if you change cartridges every four weeks as recommended.
Cost per Liter: Which Is More Economical?
The 4-pack of MAXTRA PRO cartridges costs $19.81, which breaks down to about $0.033 per liter (based on 600 liters total). The Marella pitcher with one cartridge costs $15.06, but you only get 150 liters of filtered water before needing a replacement.
If you're a regular coffee drinker, the 4-pack offers better long-term value. However, the pitcher is a lower upfront investment if you're just trying filtered water for the first time.
Trade-offs to consider
- Upfront cost vs. long-term value: The 4-pack costs $19.81 but delivers 600 liters. The pitcher costs $15.06 but only 150 liters. Choose the 4-pack if you plan to filter regularly; choose the pitcher if you want to test the waters. Calculate your monthly water consumption to see which option pays off faster.
- Convenience vs. flexibility: The Marella pitcher is a complete solution with a built-in cartridge. The 4-pack is for existing pitchers, giving you the flexibility to replace cartridges as needed. If you already own a Marella, the 4-pack is the obvious choice. If not, the pitcher is the easiest start.
- Replacement interval: Both options recommend changing the cartridge every four weeks for hygiene. The 4-pack aligns with a quarterly replacement schedule, while the single cartridge requires more frequent reordering. Set a reminder to swap cartridges monthly to maintain water quality.
